Glen Mhor Distillery, Inverness: Research In Progress

Last year, I was invited to write an article for a special edition of Business & Industrial History about my experiences researching Glen Mhor.

The final product, titled ‘Glen Mhor Distillery, Inverness: Research In Progress,’ captures the journey I’ve experienced along with some unforgettable highlights. It's just fresh off the press and should be available soon.

The offer arrived at a perfect moment as I began to redirect my attention towards the Glen Albyn distillery. This isn't to imply that my work on Glen Mhor is finished; the endeavour is ongoing, and I will update this site as new discoveries come to light. However, there was also a feeling of reflecting on what has been successful and what aspects could be improved for the upcoming research project. Additionally, there was a need to process everything and muster the courage to effectively start anew.

Locating the materials is just one aspect of the job; bringing them to life online is another challenge altogether. The crucial part lies in between; delving deeper into the information, questioning myself 'what does this really reveal' and how it fits within the historical context. As a society, we often treat too many things as disposable, and we are often guilty of addressing issues without examining the root causes and interpreting what events can genuinely teach us.

This might be the closest you get to a book about Glen Mhor. Although it targets researchers and archivists, detailing how I have navigated various paths to uncover materials, I also share the human element and some of the incredible discoveries that have surfaced. There were far too many to fit into a single article, but from a journey to Newcastle, to finalising a deal in a Greggs branch, or tracking down lost materials through an Estate Agent in England, it has been an enjoyable adventure, and something new to add to the glorious timeline

I extend my gratitude to everyone associated with the Business & Industrial Journal and to each person who has assisted me in uncovering everything related to Glen Mhor. Thank you all.
